I took a similar approach to this semester. Was really fed up with all the late work, so no partial credit for late work anymore. No excuses (eg “tech issues” at 11:59pm). No redos if they didn’t like their grade. I did not curve any of the exams either, and I did not offer any extra credit. In-class points could not be made up. AI work received a 0 and was reported to the Office of Student Conduct.

Thanks for posting this. I am struggling with so many of the same things right now. I respectfully disagree with bankruptbusybee that classes that require attendance are "worthless" (seems like an unfair overgeneralization). I have mainly sophomores, traditional aged, and these kids' school habits were shaped in part by the pandemic shut-downs so I have found they require more structure and directiveness. They miss a lot of class, discover they are failing, and then want to make up work during the last week. I was told by a student this semester that he felt "targeted". I have no idea what he meant by that and it is a first but this generation learns about life on social media where they learn all about things like 'gaslighting', 'targeting', 'toxicity' and 'abusing your position of power/authority' and then throw those terms around with a weird frequency. I think your grading structure is well thought-out and balanced. Coming to class is a basic expectation like coming to work, and you are not giving points for showing up, but for doing work in class. I also do in-class work, interactive and application/discussion-based, that can not be made up and is worth points. It is a really valuable part of the learning experience and I don't want them missing it. Good luck, I think you are on the right track.

The only thing surprising about this post is that OP has been a professor for 26 years and don’t know whether or not this is common. Of course it is,as it is in any profession. It’s called failing up and it happens all the time.

I know what is common at my institution, but you rarely know the true inside political tricks of other institutions. Especially when other institutions do not wish people to know that they made a horrible hiring decision. I have been on a lot of search committees, but at the dean level and above we commonly use search firms that do initial vetting. I have learned things about some candidates from friends at other institutions who have worked with those candidates and that is often the best source of information but otherwise...what you see on the CV and cover letter are pretty much all the information you have. I also wonder what happens at other places because we are a teaching institution in a very small town in midwest and have trouble attracting a pool of qualified candidates for upper admin positions. Larger or more prestigious institutions may not have the same challenges.
