At Amazon's instruction, I spent $600 shipping a return to a third party seller. How stupid/screwed am I?

I quoted them correctly. They added more context in the email. Legal obligation or not, they've denied me and denied the appeal. I could file in small claims court but the fee is $170.

If all they said is "not to worry, ship it and we will refund you" then that's not them saying they'll pay for shipping as well. If they didn't explicitly say that in writing, I would have been very wary. Really not sure why you're arguing with me on this since, again, it was a perfectly valid question about info you left out of the original post.
