Unpopular opinion: Cynthia Erivo’s performance in Wicked fell flat for me
I watched the movie yesterday, and honestly, it was a struggle to stay through the whole thing. Her performance felt inauthentic and lacked emotional depth for a story/character of this weight. It seemed like she didn’t do the emotional work or scene and script analysis needed to bring this story to life. Throughout most of the film, her intentions and objectives fell flat—something that should have been stronger. Instead, she focused on the technical aspects of her performance, like making sure her singing sounded polished and hitting her marks. It wasn’t until the final 30 minutes of the movie that her performance started to feel more genuine. I’m so disappointed—did anyone else feel the same?
Ariana Grande and the rest of the cast did a pretty solid job. I honestly think Ariana Grande should be nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Wicked. She was amazing!
