Honestly stopped trying to analyze the show for a bit after reading this
I quoted this excerpt in a post a while back, but I remember thinking that I didn't care for what this show wanted to say if the creators meant Gendo to be in the right. (Of course, this was the original show, so maybe they realized they needed to change him, which led to his regret in EoE and the Rebuilds.)
EDIT: By "in the right" I mean in terms of his treatment of Shinji. In general, people view Gendo as a bad father, but this excerpt implies that he was intended to be a good father. Therefore, what Gendo was meant to be and what we think of him are the opposite.
