Help powering on Sony Discman D-2

Help with Walkman D-2 powering up?

I am on vacation and I decided to pick up a Discman D-2 at a Flea Market for $25. Got home, put some batteries in it, and alas, no power. Am I just confused about how to turn it on, or is there something wrong? Thanks much.

PS, the Pause/Play button is a bit strange acting, the button doesn’t click every time I release pressure.
