something weird that happened at the Bristol show on Saturday that I keep thinking about
Stew was leading into the final joke of the show, which he has been building up since the first half. there was a lead in line that got a amicably rowdy response from the Beacon audience. as the babble dies down, someone in the stalls makes a noise of adulation, sort of an "OH!" Stew plows on. the noise is heard again. no response from Stew. it's heard a third time. it's now obvious that someone is trying to get Stew's attention, presumably to heckle. Stew goes "What?" pointing in the direction of the noise. the calling voice stumbles through something along the lines of "do you have... anything to say about uh, y'know. Gaza?" there were a few groans and murmurs, it has not gone down well. Stew gestures to his hearing aids and explains that he'll have to turn them up to hear that far into the crowd, and that the last joke has been completely thrown off timing. he takes his hearing aids out, places them on the stool and turns them up one by one. he asks the stalls guy to repeat the question, to which there is complete silence. there is more murmuring, it's clear everyone thinks this guy is a spineless worm. someone from the upper levels made some bad joke about Stew not picking sides, I don't remember the wording but it was equally bad. Stew managed to pull the room back by calling the guy a dick for ruining the end of the show.
quite badly misjudged i think.
