My Grievances Regarding Skibidi Toilet's Storytelling: An Essay
Before you read, I'd like to say that I did not make this essay to hate on Boom or Skibidi Toilet, nor do I encourage anyone else to do so. I had made a similar essay regarding Skibidi Toilet's action/fight scenes roughly 2 months ago with the same intentions as this essay here: To offer some genuine feedback and criticism regarding Boom's handling of Skibidi Toilet's plot and lore.
For quite some time now, I have been following the plot of Skibidi Toilet, its characters, and its lore. We all know it started with no plot, which progressively evolved from there into the increasingly complex plot that we know today. The problem with this plot that I began to notice since the release of Season 25 is that the plot and lore is starting to become too big and convoluted for me to really enjoy following along.
I believe that the root of the problem is that the plot right now is greatly diluted. This problem is being inadvertently worsened by constantly introducing new characters, adding new elements to the overall plot and lore, and just in general leaving us with new questions without answering many of the old ones at all.
—--------------- Part 1: The Characters —----------------
Characters are the very core of every single story. A character could come in many different shapes, sizes, and forms. Sometimes, a character is as simple as an individual. Other times, one can come in the forms of groups or organizations. A character could even be as abstract as a concept or idea. In short, a character is someone or something whose words and/or actions drive forward the plot of the story.
There are two problems I have with the way Boom handles his characters.
The first problem is that I believe Boom is trying to focus on the stories of too many characters all at the same time. Because of this, they are becoming shallow and diluted. There are so many characters being given attention that it becomes difficult to emotionally invest yourself in any of them because they never truly get enough time to be explored to a proper depth. Their motives, goals, flaws, personality, and even backstory either remain a mystery or are glossed over and remain shallow.
The second, equally large problem, is that Boom is focusing so much on the backstories of all of his characters and does little to nothing with those backstories with regards to the current plot. For example, he’ll show more of Cathy’s backstory, or Scientist TV’s backstory, but we rarely see those backstories playing any meaningful role in driving the plot forward. To put it simply, most backstories we see from characters are just there to exist. They are rarely ever utilized to actually advance the plot forward.
The main reason why the G-Toilet vs Juggernaut extra scene is one of, if not the best scene in Skibidi Toilet in my opinion, is that it properly addresses both these problems. This scene eliminates all distractions and takes its time to truly flesh out and explore both Juggernaut and G-Toilet’s personalities, motives, and flaws.Equally as important, though, is that this scene doesn’t simply acknowledge the two character’s backstories. It uses those backstories to advance the plot in a meaningful way. It doesn’t just mention the idea that G-Toilet and Juggernaut were once close friends, it actively uses that idea to drive the plot forward.
It’s what makes G-toilet and Juggernaut such well written characters. They both have had time to have their characters explored on a deeper level, and that their backstories aren’t there just to exist. They play a meaningful and ACTIVE role in the current plot. It has the positive effect of making these characters so much deeper and enjoyable to follow.
For the final thoughts on characters, Boom should take the time to properly explore his characters and their traits, but so much more importantly, take the backstories and previous events of his characters and use them to advance the current plot, rather than simply leaving those backstories to exist without contributing anything.
—----------------- Part 2: The Lore —-----------------
One thing that most people can unanimously agree on is that Skibidi Toilet’s lore is deep, like an iceberg. There are so few things that we currently know, and so many things we know that we don’t know, and even more things we don’t know that we don’t know. This part of the essay will be much shorter because it relies on speculation and is not as important to the story. The problem that I have with the lore is that whenever Boom expands on the lore, he always leaves us with more questions and rarely with any answers. This alone isn’t bad, but when continued over a long period of time, things start progressively making less and less sense because there are so many elements to the lore being revealed, but we never find out how it’s all connected, or what it means for the current plot, and what we do know is incredibly vague or left up to speculation.
I feel as though with the release of season 25, we’ve sort of crossed the border between lore that’s mysterious and exciting to piece together, to lore that is confusing, convoluted, and increasingly annoying to follow. I think Boom should start thinking about solving at least some parts of the Lore before adding even more to its complexity.
—----------------- Closing Thoughts —-----------------------
As I had mentioned before in my essay on fight scenes, Skibidi Toilet is an amazing series that I truly want to realize its full potential and see the highest quality it can have. On the chance that you are reading this, Boom, I just want you to slow down for a moment and take the time to flesh out and explore the characters and lore he’s already established. You don’t have to add new characters and lore to keep us invested. With good enough thought and writing, you can make just a handful of lore and characters extremely impactful and powerful.
Quality over Quantity. Until next time.
