How do you stay safe and find any risk?

I am still early in my process, but my situation is that I am setting up a document answering module. I need it to be confined within my network, with security as the highest priority. However, I also need the ability to establish a tunnel to an access point. What risks should I be aware of? How do you identify risks if they exist?
