If you are under/unemployed with a four year degree you should seriously consider taking the Chinapill and going to teach English at a Chinese university. A degree is all you need and it's basically a cheat code to a cushy middle class existence.
Seriously, make an account on E-Chinacities and look at whatever city interests you and you'll see university listings. If you are not visibly insane and apply you'll get the job. It's like the 80s out here demand massively outstrips supply and unis are always looking to hire English teachers. All you need is a degree and a TEFL (which you can get online in a few days). Virtually all of these jobs provide housing in the form of a rent free apartment, and there is subsidized food at the canteen so your salary is yours to do with whatever. The total pay is fairly low but so is cost of living and with the social benefits you should be able to bank $800-$2000 a month I'll bet your current savings aren't that good. Plus you get four months off probably not fully paid but usually two of those are full salary and the other two some kind of stipend.
1.Why do you keep saying university rather then just teach English? First because I assume most people here, myself included, are vain and pseudo-intellectual enough to value the title of university lecturer over teacher at happy giraffe kindergarten. Happy giraffe will pay you more sometimes even a fair bit more, if you want that do it, but I think the university is so much better. English teachers are degenerate scum everyone knows that, but you get a pass cause you work at a uni, you'll literally see Chinese' attitudes change when you say you teach English.... at X university they'll regard you as a real teacher and a professional which gives you much more social cachet then at happy giraffe, plus you can hang with Chinese professors. You can chat with your students and get an insight into the culture, as a youngish foreign teacher you are assumed to be a cool foreign teacher until proven otherwise accept offers to chill with them after class at hotpot, KTV or whatever your role is closer to grad student anyway. A lot of universities can arrange a Chinese class or tutor you ask and for your social life you should definitely learn some.
- But people will assume I'm a sexpat!? Lol no they won't this is China not Cambodia and you work at a university.
Life in China is pretty chill if you learn some Chinese and make some Chinese friends. In My opinion it's better to live outside the cities of Beijing, Shanghai Shenzhen and Guangzhou but if you must choose one do Beijing. The Business type foreigners who frequent Shanghai and Guangzhou aren't gonna vibe well with RS users and smaller cities offer more chances for Lynchian liminal experiences with Chinese randos and unhinged foreigner stories.
If you do go;
Try to remember that even the most lukewarm lib takes are pretty edgy in China, as it's officially a Marxist-Leninist one party dictatorship where promoting constitutional democracy is illegal. So don't look down on your students for having them.
Don't fuck around with drugs even if there is a "scene" drugs are not a wink wink thing and the police let raves and stuff grow and then bust everyone. As a foreigner you are a presumed degenerate corrupting the pure nation of China so you are not going to get any leniency. Chinese friends and acquaintances may react to a story of you smoking weed, as if you'd told them you went on a three day meth bender. So know your audience it's not the west.
The internet isn't a problem just get a VPN and you can access any part of the internet you want.
People outside certain minorities tend to support the government or be neutral about it. China isn't like other places you've visited authoritarian or not where you can assume people are up for bitching about the government. Everyone takes stuff like Taiwan very seriously.
So yeah if you are struggling or don't know what to do or sick of being an overeducated barista go forth and add a stint at a Chinese uni to your Bohemian resume.
