Shots not killing but 2nd shot ruining pelt afterwards?

Idk if this is a trinket but sometimes when im hunting small games, my arrow doesnt kill the animal but doesnt ruin the pelt neither, but if i go for another shot it ruins it completely, actually pmo and i dont know if theres a solution, if it is a trinket or something like that whats even the point? If i cant kill it afterwards without ruining it Ps: i know what weapon to use, its only happening to small game animals, using the small game arrows
