Newbie Seeking Advice on Transitioning from Windows to Linux
I am thinking about switching from Windows to Linux to streamline my workflow with HoudiniFX. After much deliberation and consulting with peers in my field, I've decided to give PopOS a try. However, to ensure a smooth transition without compromising my productivity, I'm planning to start by dual-booting with Windows. Before I take the leap, I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate your insights:
- Dual Booting Concerns: Is dual-booting a good idea for maintaining performance on both operating systems? Will one OS affect the performance of the other?
- Data Safety: I have a significant amount of data (around 1.5 TB) that I can't afford to lose. Since I can't currently invest in an external backup drive, how risky is it to potentially lose my data or even the Windows OS if something goes wrong during the transition?
- Backup Options for Windows: My Windows OS may not be genuine, and I'm unsure how to back it up properly. Any suggestions for a novice like me to ensure I have a backup in case things go south?
- Guidance for New Linux Users: I'll be researching the installation process and requirements for dual-booting, but I'd love to hear your do's and don'ts or any tips you have for a newcomer to Linux. What are some essential things I should know before making the switch?
I'm eager to hear your advice and experiences as I make this transition. Thanks in advance for your help!
