New laws governing bicycles in Japan
Attention bicycle riders on Japan: From November this year (2024), you can be jailed and fined big bucks if
1) you ride a bicycle and use a mobile phone at the same time. (1 year in jail or ¥300,000 fine)
2) you ride a bicycle while under the influence of alcohol. (3 years in prison or ¥500,000 fine).
Obviously, if you are still a minor (not legally an adult), your parents are responsible for your actions and are liable to receive the punishment stipulated by the new laws.
If you are a parent, please teach your children what are considered illegal and the possible punishment you might get if they do not follow the laws.
The government is very serious in enforcing these new laws to reduce bicycle caused accidents which are trending up recently. Please ride your bicycles responsibly.
Also new, electric assisted bicycles are now subject to the same laws governing motor scooters. Know the laws covering scooter riders and respect them to avoid jail terms and fines for legal violations.
