Muscles feeling like a rubber band sting/stretch type of pain during lunges/split squats

Hi guys,

Hoping someone can help me - every time I do split squat or lunge movements, I feel a sting of pain in my working quad. The best I can describe the feeling is like a rubber band type of sting. I've been trying to add quad stretches before doing these exercises and also adding in more quad exercises to make build it up better which I think has helped a little but the stinging pain is still there. Am I going too far into the ROM or is it because my quad is just weak?
