Noob Review #6 - Weller Special Reserve
Hey everyone! I'm back with another noob review! Here for all of your unrefined pallete reviews :)
As of now I have been trying whiskey for 1 months with bottles such as JD SBBP Rye, Still Austin Musician, Four Roses, Buffalo Trace, Macallan 12 and more.
All reviews are unbiased and funded by me. They are all drank neat In today's review, we are looking at the Special Reserve bottle from Weller
Price: $14.99 375ml (Texas Total Wine) Cup: Cylinder, short Proof: 90 Noob Flavor Rating: 3.5/5 Noob Value Rating: 4/5
Alright I have to say, I was very excited about this. Yes I know it's "Bottom" shelf, but I was still looking for it. I've only seen it for $60 in the 1.75L version and I didn't want to go all in without knowing if I'd like it or not. Luckily while shopping the isles of Total Wine, I ran across it, in it's smaller form and sprung for it :).
Uhhhh, okay... well thats lackluster. My first words of my first sip of Weller Special Reserve. Coming in at 90 proof and at 14 smackers, this puppy is worth the value IF you are truly new to whiskey and have not had things like BT or more complex bottles. It really shines against run of the mill drug store/corner liquor cheap whiskey. The downfall however is that... it's just not that great sadly, it's the okayest bottle you'll probably ever find. Is it smooth? Yes! Is it tasty? It's meh... The best I can describe it as is water that has a slight caramel/mild spice/Oaky - Tang flavor but nothing really stood out.
It got the job done at the end of the day, and I admit I enjoyed the easy sipping. I just wish more flavor was there BUT at $14 you can't really expect much either I guess.
Overall, I'll say this, it's leaps above the cheap stuff, in rum terms which I know very well, this is like choosing Kraken over Bacardi and Captain Morgan. It's a slight cut above, but it's nothing to really write home about. I can tell it'll make a delicious mixer and if mixers are your vibe, this should probably be a staple if you can find it cheap. If you are a new whiskey drinker, start here, if you've never bumped up from No°7, start here. From there, move to something like Buffalo Trace and then delve into the more expensive, more complex bottles. Again, this is not to say it wasn't good, it just wasn't great.
And with that the final Noob Rating is: 3.7/5
Sorry Weller ✌️
Cheers Friends 🥃🔥
