Why Silver Flames wasn’t sexy enough…
Disclaimer: I just finished Silver Flames, and I came to complain, ha, even though I love the books.
So I’m generally not into “spin off” romances but I was excited for Silver Flames because I thought the Nesta/Cass dynamic actually was sexy in the first three books. (Not counting the novella.)
Nesta was def one of the most interesting icharacters and her and Cassian had sparks — she was haughty and DNGAF about anyone or anything, and he was cocky, alpha and full of himself and also DNGAF — even more so than Rhys — and it felt like Nesta and Cassian met their match in each other. I thought this could have been a really fun, frenemies to lovers vibe.
But instead, Cassian was like her AA sponsor or something in SF, which was … not that sexy of a trope for me?
And just kind of like, a choice. Plus, everything I thought was sexy about Cassian kind of fell away. He struck me as just kind of a well-meaning puppy dog the whole book. (His whole stumbling through being a courtier also added to that.)
I liked many parts of SF — especially the three women training and I wish the blood rite part had been longer — but felt kinda cheated out of the Nesta/Cassian book I wanted.
I think I read SJM also plans on making the next book a trauma recovery romance and I think that’s all a choice too…
