Are we the only generation that joked about "the missing link"?

I'm at the hospital and my spouse is about to birth our second and final progeny, and for months she's been having bad heartburn. Apparently there's a link between heartburn and how hairy the baby is.

So I made a joke about him being "the missing link" and the (likely Gen x and boomer) nurses just gave me blank stares, and they had never heard the saying before.

I recall when I was young back in the 80s and early 90s that people would joke about hairy people being "the missing link" but I doubt younger generations would get the reference either.

Anybody else heard this before, or was this some weird thing I picked up that wasn't really part of the zeitgeist?

Edit: baby has been born, and sure enough has a full head of hair!
