Houseplant suddenly had blood all over it

This happened to me over a decade ago but it still baffles me. When this occurred I was hand washing my dishes because we didn’t have a dishwasher at the time. I had little shelves next to the window above the kitchen sink. On one of the shelves I had a small, potted plant. It’s a very common plant, I see them in peoples homes and in lobbies and things quite frequently. As I’m washing the dishes I see the plant, which is basically eye-level with me, and I could tell it needed water. I figured I’d water it once I finished the dishes. Just then, my son, who was playing in a hallway next to the kitchen, made some commotion with his toys. I turned my head toward where he was. He and his toys were ok, so I turned my focus back to the dishes. I caught sight of the plant again, and there were droplets of a dark liquid all over the leaves. I stared at it for a moment because I had just looked at it and they weren’t there. It looked like blood but how could it be? I dried my hands so I could touch the droplets and get a feel for the color and texture. Once I touched it, it was very obvious it was blood. I started checking myself to see if I’d been cut or had a nose bleed. I checked the ceiling and checked all around that whole area. After the fact I even went online to see if the plant has a cycle where it excretes something. Nope. To this day, I am still weirded out by it. I’ve never been able to determine where it came from or why. The plant originally belonged to a friend of mine. I gave it back to her and said, “be careful with this thing.”
