What makes a manipulative character lovable vs a hated one?

I was originally going to name the title why is Yuuichi loved so much but Kokorogi hated and ended up thinking about this. Idk if this is a dumb question but I'm curious to why certain characters are loved or hated even though they share the same trait: being manipulative.
