[QCrit] RAIN DOGS (Urban Fantasy, 170k, first attempt)

So, like, I already know the novel is way too long and would probably have to be self-published as-is. I've been working on this sucker for years. It's plot heavy and purple-language-light, so I'm not sure how I'd cut it down to make it acceptably short. But I figure I'll give this a shot anyway. (Also I know my comps are movies and that's a probably a no-no, but I'm still on the search for good recent novel equivalents.)

Thanks in advance!

Sam Sullivan earns a living in Seattle finding shelter and jobs for other werewolves looking to avoid hefty government fees and restrictions. It’s illegal, it ain’t exactly profitable, but it’s one form of defiance against ever-more-oppressive wolf laws. Sam’s only 23, with track marks scarring his arms and a past full of abandonment scarring his brain, so defiance is sometimes the only thing keeping him going.

Devika is the head of Seattle’s tribe of vampires: adored, given everything they could ever want by humans who desperately want to join the ranks of the immortal. She’s not content with that. Humans are fickle beings; their love could turn to hate, and she wants to make sure her tribe will be secure if it ever does. But first, she wants to rid her city - rid the world - of the infestation of werewolves polluting it. Not because she truly believes that a wolf is destined to rise to defeat her kind - she’s hardly superstitious - but because they’re animalistic, ugly little beasts whose relationship with humanity makes all supernaturals look bad.

Sam fights off two vampires who appear to be threatening a (distractingly attractive) human, which puts him in Devika’s spotlight. When he learns about her plan to destroy werewolves entirely, he has a choice to make. If he fights to save the wolves, he puts what little he has going for him - his adopted family, the small group of friends he’s managed not to drive away, and Nathan, his new (distractingly attractive) admirer - at risk of destruction. But if he keeps his head down, saves himself and the people he loves, it could bring about the eradication of his entire species.

At 170k words, RAIN DOGS is an urban fantasy mix of the Underworld series and Netflix’s Bright.
