Hover without visual reference

So I just unlocked heli cargo, and hoist in career mode in msfs24.

I have no problems hovering above land, I am in good control of the helicopter in all stages of flight.

However when I try to hover over the open ocean, or carrying supplies to/from oil rigs I am completely useless. There’s no reference for me to lock on to and adjust from, and I end loosing the horizon with resulting chaos to the hover.

Do you guys have any tips to help me improve hovering while over the ocean?

I’m flying in first person from inside the cockpit and using trackIR. On PC. Every setting set to realism, and all assistants disabled.
