Odysseus faced Poseidon entire family, there was no escape
Once i heard someone that Odysseus had to face a son of Poseidon while navigating, how unluck. But actually 70% of everything Odysseus encountered is related to Poseidon. Because Odysseus is in the sea.
So for example, we have Polyphemus. Contrary to popular belief influenced by Percy Jackson (and The Mythology Guy), not every cyclop is a son of Poseidon. And there is quite a lot of different cyclops tribes in different countries. The Scholia says that all these lesser cyclops were born from Ouranos blood, but the Odyssey itself strongely suggest they were descendents of the giants (but that is another discussion). A comedy by Euripides said that the sheepherds cyclops at least were sons of Poseidon, so is not that of a new idea, but is clearly not the idea of the Odyssey. Of all cyclops, Odysseus indeed encountered the one that was the son of Poseidon and Thoosa, a daughter of the monstrous sea god Phorcys, the father of a lot of female monsters like Medusa and Echidna.
Them later Odysseus encounters the Laestrygonians. The Odyssey dont relate their parentage, but in all other sources is said they are a tribe sprung from Poseidon.
Later Odysseus finds Charybdis and Skylla. Charybdis is also a daughter of Poseidon, not said in the Odyssey but in all other places. Skylla however has a bunch of different parentages. The Odyssey only describe her mother Cratais (apperantly a epithet for Hecate). But her father can be beings like Phorcys (who is already a father in law to Poseidon trough Thoosa, and even Medusa if we include Hesiod Theogony), Triton... and Poseidon. So yeah she could be a daughter of Poseidon or at least her granddaughter trough Triton.
Them we have the Phaecians, and fans that only saw Epic will not know them. They are also descendents of Poseidon. But contrary to all the savage giants and monsters i described, the Phaecians are very cool. They have a society were automatons do most of the work, and their island is so blessed with good climate by the gods they dont need to work but can just enjoy their lives with music and sports. They also have advanced ships that need no man to pilot, only a voice command and it takes you everywhere. Odysseus is given one by them, and is this ship that finally lets him return home, because his two problems: the lack of men and directions, is quickly solved by a automatic ship that had "google maps" in it.
So the problem is not facing a child of Poseidon because he was unlucky. Just like Zeus had a bunch of kids in land, Poseidon (who also had a bunch of kids in land) can be expected to have a huge family in the sea, either of monsters, or the cool Phaecians. The problem is that Odysseus should stay anonymous while at sea for a quick return, but his Homeric pride betrayed him, since he could not let Polyphemus mock him for being a "nobody" instead of a hero with a eternal name.
