Help me decide between a one bedroom that’s $600 more or my current studio?
Copying this from another thread just to get more input.
Hi! For context, I make about $99k, approx 6k a month after tax. I go to grad school, which will approx be $32k a year for the next four years. I’ll probably take out loans at some point, but I want to pay as much out of pocket as I can to avoid interest.
So here comes the core problem. I moved to a city for grad school and chose an apartment that was the cheapest I can find in the neighborhood I wanted to be in. I pay $1400 right now, including utilities and electricity, but my space is SMALL. It’s around 200 sq ft or less. I also work from home, so I am starting to feel pretty cramped when I’m home for too long. I also walk about 20 mins to attend grad school classes once a week. I’m based in downtown Chicago, btw. Here’s my dilemma— I found a one bedroom apartment that’s 700 sq feet for $1900, with utilities included and a nice skyline view. With electricity and internet, it’ll probably be closer to $2005 a month. It’s a jump from what I was paying earlier, but it would be really nice to have all that space. Plus, this building is only 8 minutes away from my school building. It’s also closer to my doctor as well. In terms of neighborhoods, they are relatively close to each other, but the $1400 has more of a neighborhood feel, while the $1900 one is more in the urban area. If I pay $1900, I would also have to reduce how much I can save. Since I got a raise that brought me up to 99k, I also do think I can afford to have a better place now, but I don’t want to but a financial constraint on myself too much by making this move.
Also, I would need to end my current lease in the 1400 and find a someone to take my lease to move into the $1900 apartment. But this would at least break me out of the October rental cycle and into the March cycle.
What are your thoughts? I found a convertible option that’s $1750, but the flooring is carpet, which I’m not a big fan of…
