A bit of a rant about gods
I want to start by saying that what follows is purely my opinion. I recognize many will disagree completely with my position here, and I respect your freedom to play how you like to play. I make this disclaimer because I'm about to write a rant. It will carry a tone that would, to any sane reader, seem like I believed the opposite, that my way is the only way. I do not. It's just that, like all good rants, it will have a bit of an absolutist flavor that just adds a certain conviction to the thing, but please believe when I tell you I hold sacred the notion that your games are yours, and I hope only you play them exactly as you like. If you read this and are not swayed by my bombast and bluster, I will think no less of you, your skills as a DM/player or the games you enjoy running and playing. That said, herewith, a rant.
Please, I'm begging you, when prepping your home-brew campaign, STOP with the f_cking gods!! Enough with the "the gods are at war" or "you must save a fallen god", or "retrieve the weapon/heart/talisman/champion of a dead god", or "my PC is the chosen champion of an evil god" and on and on with the f_cking gods!!! Enough gods!!! It's such a cheap, contrived way of adding high stakes to a campaign, and at this point, it's just a tired old storytelling crutch. It's so cliché I'd bet many of you have never in your life played a full campaign that did not have some "oh my gawd it's world-ending important" god sh_t at the center of it! It's just so tired and stale. Please, just let the gods rest. Maybe you can let them exist in your world exactly as they do in ours - believed by some, disbelieved by many, and completely silent on matters Prime-material. Or they're so separate from us they cannot be understood. Whatever. Just f_cking STOP with all the god sh_t!!! It's so f_cking tedious and boring!! Add stakes and gravitas to your campaign WITHOUT gods. I promise you it's possible!! To paraphrase the great Edna Mode: "No Gods!!"
Whew. That felt good. End of rant. Now please go forth and play however you want to play, with or without gods (but please without). Just my opinion.
