Seventeen-year-old charged with second-degree murder in Station Boulevard shooting
Officers were called in after Omar Al-Khalidi arrived at the General campus of The Ottawa Hospital with a gunshot wound. He died in hospital.
A 17-year-old youth is facing a second-degree murder charge in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Omar Al-Khalidi on Station Boulevard on Feb. 14, police said.
The youth was expected to appear in court Thursday, the Ottawa Police Service said in a media release. He can’t be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
“The Homicide Unit would like to thank the public for their assistance in this investigation,” Staff-Sgt. Stephanie Burns said on social media.
“Suspicious incidents being reported in a timely manner allow us to follow up quickly, coupled with some really good police work, brought about this arrest.”
Officers were called in just before 7 p.m. on Feb. 14 after Al-Khalidi arrived at the General campus of The Ottawa Hospital with a gunshot wound. He died in hospital.
Police said the next morning that the shooting had happened on Station Boulevard, but did not say how Al-Khalidi arrived at the hospital less than one kilometre away.
The homicide unit was seen focusing part of its investigation on a parking lot of the Blair Court Community townhouses, an Ottawa Community Housing complex on Station Road near Coronation Park.
Police tape cordoned off a large area of the parking lot and investigators could be seen both photographing the scene and collecting evidence.
