I do not feel direct instruction is bad
As a first year teacher, I do not understand why there is so much emphasis in teacher education to stray away from lecture based learning. To be sure, if I am teaching math for 40 minutes I will most certainly not just lecture my students for 40 minutes. But teacher education seems to have this idea students must always teach themselves the materials; everything must be a jigsaw and direct instruction must be minimized.
I always try to start my lesson with 10 minutes of direct instruction before I give assessments or guided practice. This has been effective for me, and by sticking to this rather simple lesson plan/template, I have significantly cut down on my lesson planning (which was much longer when I tried to make everything student guided or inherently collaborative).
