Thoughts on Hadestown - didn’t love it as much as I wanted to, couldn’t get into the music

I’m from Australia and visited USA for a holiday. I saw Hadestown as it was one that hadn’t come to Australia yet.

Everything about it on paper sounded good. I love Greek mythology. And the show itself was great - performances, acting, singing, staging etc. Eurydice was the standout in terms of acting and singing in my opinion.

However, I’m not sure if it was because I was very tired from my travels, but I was struggling to stay awake. I just simply could not get into the songs. So many of them almost hit for me, but ultimately lacked… I’m not sure, catchy hooks? Even the ones that did catch on (way down Hadestown and keep your head low) aren’t play-the-song-on-repeat worthy.

During what I believe to be the emotional climax numbers (when Hades and Persephone reconnects and Orpheus and Eurydice begins the walk out) I could tell people around me were crying and sobbing and I was so close to feeling it too, but just could not connect to the music enough to push me over the edge.

FWIW, I saw the Lion King the night before, and I’ve seen Hairspray, Chicago (both of which I literally love every single song), Book of Mormon, &Juliet, Hamilton, Come From Away, and Avenue Q. I’ve never been tired during a musical before. Something about Hadestown just didn’t hit quite right.

EDIT: one thing I did really enjoy actually was the choreography for Chant (what I previously called “keep your head low”). Probably the most memorable part of the musical for me lol

EDIT 2: very surprised how many comments this is getting lol!
