Cord cutting one flame got larger?

I did a cord cutting recently with friends present. It was for her and her ex. The cord burned immediately, then his candles flam doubled in size, staying that way until his candle went out. No flickering, wax pooled directly behind his. Nothing towards her. Hers steadily burned until I put it out. First time I’ve seen this. Anyone have this before? Thoughts?
