Best way to build up a Monk?

I'm playing the durge as a monk, my first time trying either out, so I really have no clue what I'm doing. My favorite class so far has been the paladin, which I've been able to build up pretty well. I've just hit level 3, and I'm wondering which monk subclass I should choose between Disciple of the Elemnts, because it grants me powerful ranged attacks, or Way of the Open Hand, any ideas?
