Mainstream Schooling with students with PDA
Hi all,
I am after some information about how schools are supporting teachers and the classroom with students diagnosed with PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance).
This is new to my 10 year career, although I have had students in the past with Austim (verbal, non verbal), ODD, trauma, selective muteness, developmental delays, severe anxiety, etc. the list is long.
Currently there is a student who shows clear signs of PDA, though currently has only been diagnosed with ASD. This student is exceptionally violent when in ‘meltdowns’ where they targets other students and teachers by throwing, hitting, spitting, hateful words, and threatening their life with weapons.
This student also gloats that they get to do whatever they want and disrupts others learning. They are currently working with the TEEACH system for choice, but they don’t like being different to others so tries class assigned work which triggers. No full time aide, so meltdowns are dealt with teacher only calling for assistance and evacuating the class.
I am looking for other teachers who have had similar experiences to find ways as a school to implement support for that student, teacher, and the whole class.
TIA
