Can progressive stamp and die operations remove partial material?

I need to add some texture to a stamped part for grip, similar to the grooves etched into the body of this pocket knife.

I imagine those were created with a CNC operation. My part will be made with a progressive stamp and die, so is there a way to create a similar effect with stamp/die? Partially remove some material to create a texture in the face of the material?
