Just got an apartment in Sydney. First night here I found three cockroaches and a giant spider.

Hi there! I am a Norwegian on a working holiday visa and I decided to get an apartment in Sydney over the summer. This is currently my first night here, I went to use the bathroom before going to bed and I see this GIANT f***ing spider, just hanging out on the bathroom door. I almost pissed myself, turned around for a second, now I don't know where it is. As I turn around I see a cockroach. Then another. And then another.

Now, I have been here for about a month. So I have seen roaches and rats, but this was my first spider. And the rats were always in the streets, the roaches were in the rooftops of hostels I was staying at. You know, reasonable places for them to be! But I have never encountered any of them inside someone's home or inside a hotel/hostel room. And certainly not where I f***ing sleep!(Sorry, but I'm really stressing out. I don't know if I will be able to sleep tonight).

Had it been one single roach or one single spider, I wouldn't be so surprised maybe. But 3 roaches and a spider?? Now I'm concerned about whether or not the apartment might be infested. And I already transfered the first week and security bond. Does anyone know if I'm screwed in terms of getting my money back, should the apartment be infested? Should I be panicked at all? Or is this just a common thing I need to get used to?

Cheers. Please help me.

EDIT: After almost 24 hours I have received an amazing response from you guys! So many helpful tips from so many kindhearted and sympathetic people! My impression of the Aussies has only improved as a result of this, so thank you! I have also gotten some snarky comments, but it's reddit, you know? What are you gonna do? Name of the game, really.

But as for me, my roommate and I have decided to inquire about pest control, just to make certain it isn't an infestation or a problem. I bought one of the sprays at wollies which will have to suffice until I can hit Bunnings tomorrow. Thanks again to everyone who shared their experiences and tips! And thank you to all the snarky commentators for slapping down some good ol fashioned truth, albeit in an insulting yet comedic fashion. You guys are great!

EDIT 2: P.S: Pest control determined that there was in fact a colony of the little German roaches and said fumigation was absolutely necessary. Just an FYI to all the doubters out there.

To all my fellow immigrants! If you see more than you think is reasonable, check. If they scurry when the lights turn on, that's bad. And if you move into an apartment and someone else already lives there, there's a legal loophole for landlords that "tenants haven't technically changed" since one tenant still remains. That way they get out of paying for the routine spray which actually is their responsibility after a tenant switch. Ask your realtor if the apartment has been sprayed, before you say yes to a place!
