Apprehensive about getting tested next week

I'm getting tested for ADHD and ASD next week.

Two items that I'm apprehensive about:

  1. I'm not sure that I want to be medicated yet, but if I do go that route it sounds expensive and sounds like its pulling teeth to maintain medication, especially when it sounds like different doctors don't accept the diagnosis from other doctors. I don't want to become dependent on medication, and then get the rug pulled out from under me. Sounds like that's happening a lot lately.
  2. Am I going to have to get my parents involved? I'm over 40 so it feels insulting to have to get my parents involved in my medical care. Also, they don't acknowledge the existence of ADHD. Their response regarding kids is that they just need a good hard spanking. Clearly, since it doesn't exist for kids, it doesn't exist for adults. As nuts as that sounds, they're not stupid people, so the "read them the questionnaire over the phone" strategy won't work. They'll figure out what's up.

I'm in the United States.

TIA for advice.
