Would a species existing in a smoke/ash filled place have darker skin?

I have a race that lives in a continent littered with volcanoes, and there’s a lot of smoke and ash basically all over. Would they have really dark or really pale skin because of this? They’re also meant to be industrious so overtime the natural smoke has been replaced with smog from factories and stuff, idk if that’s different.
