Review: Towers & Gods (Ep.5) + Spotlight

Review: Towers & Gods (Ep.5)

Spotlight #1:

Returned by the King (Ch. 21) - Kimu

I'm not gonna lie… ‘reads ch.1’… It’s a power fantasy. Sooo, dude begins to info-dumb to us about his world and what-not. Then the entire background characters - you were never meant to live long - got wiped out, & right off the bat, dudes faced up against a SSS-Monster, cuz why not! Dude gets rekt! But then gets saved by ‘Literal,’ God! Hahaha–Cuz, why not! It’s the Kirito Effect, so imma just roll with it. & proceeds to give him all the power in the universe (I’m joking of course) Why!? “Because I was so moved by your ‘willpower’ and ‘tenacity.’ . . . . Listen you piece of crap, you might as well say “Because you're the Protagonist” & break the 4th-wall! But wait, there’s more! Dude wakes up, several years into the past, then proceeds to cry after punching his old bully. Huzzah!! Lol!

Alright, alright! I’ve had my fun, but yes, that is actually ch.1. ’Cracks Fingers’ Ok, so this is going to be a small Spotlight for new stories so that the MODS don’t get angry with me since this post is actually a review for a DnD inspired story based on Tower of God. However while the story is Webtoon inspired, it isn’t actually a WEBTOON so I have to put in something Webtoon related so the post won’t get put down. Now without further ado, the mini review.

It’s a Solo Leveling inspired “power fantasy”. I could literally end this mini-review with that One sentence but I don’t want to get flagged for little effort. For the most part I can definitely see people enjoying it however, you have to keep in mind that this can be a fun read, but not a deep one. If you’re looking for overly complex, deep, philosophical, or just something above average then you’re not going to quite enjoy it since it’s literally a solo leveling power fantasy. However, I will say this, the art is really good and the way the artist panels everything and angles everything is very creative; in fact it’s probably better than most other Webtoons in recent memories. The story is definitely predictable if you’ve seen many like it before. But it can definitely be a nice read all the same. In short, if you’re not tired of the genre or know someone who’s unfamiliar with it. Then it’s a good starting off point / read. 👍🏼

Towers & Gods: Dr.Bonehead

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Comedy, Mystery, DnD

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen! To our 3rd review! Yeeaaaah!!! Alright!! Whooo!!! Hahaha!! Alright, alright, calm down, I know you’re all excited. Ok, so for this review we are going to do something slightly different. Instead of doing a WEBTOON based story, we will be doing a WEBTOON inspired story. A DnD based on a very popular Webtoon call, “Towers of God.” The reason I’m doing this is because I used to watch these guys way back when they were still doing Season 1, then clocked out at the start of season 2 so that they could collect more episodes. Safe to say that I was left with very fond memories. And boy, oh boy! Two years later and they still have me laughing my absolute head off–Spoilers, these guys are amazing! However, despite my obvious enjoyment, I will - as always - be as critical as always & if all goes well, I hope this review will draw more attention for these guys since they really are amazing. Also, instead of doing a review for all of season 1, I will be focusing on the first two arcs a.k.a. the first five episodes of season 1, then focus on the latter half on a later date. Alright! Let’s do this!

Personal Enjoyment: 9

Protagonists: 7.6 -> (8)

What can I say, everyone is simply amazing. Being more strict and critical however, I will say that Gasu, while being portrayed as ‘cool’ & ‘reserved’ is far ‘too’ reserved. I really enjoyed that forced dynamic after he was paired with Damien, in fact he even made me laugh when he told him to shut up in that dead-pan expression. However, even if a character is quiet & reserved they still need to talk & act, or be threatened with invisibility syndrome–getting lost in the background, which is hilarious because his ‘Player’ is brimming with personality. A good example of this arch-type would be Sasuke & Itachi, both are quiet & reserved but aren’t afraid–not just to speak their minds, but also go on an entire monologue. But for the most part I’m not actually even nervous, since he more than defined himself in these first 5 episodes, plus this series has over 100+ episodes (🥲…Ah! The feels!). Also, Wu was also a character who had a pretty rough start, being very similar to Gasu - in fact their overall climb in terms of enjoyability was pretty equal - however all that changed after he became “Daddy Wu” 😂🤣🪦… & in truth, this is the answer. When writing a story, you will often have characters that will not act or behaved in the way you wish, in order to rectify this you have to change their environment, & put them in a situation that forces them to either act, change, or do both. Quiet & reserved, pair him with the most hyperactive one here. Lazy & unmotivated, force him into a role of responsibility. Eden was also another character who wanted to try & be quiet & reserved but was almost immediately shut down by being forced to not only talk more, but by also being forced to absorb ALL personalities. How? They made her the leader in a team with Damien in it. 😂🤣🪦 Also, Brac you are the man! ✊🏾

Brac: 8.5

Damien: 8.5

Eden: 7.5

Gasu: 6.5

Wu: 7

Deuteragonist: (7)

Alright, I’m not gonna lie to you… This man had the worst introduction I’ve ever Seen! Where’s Da Bleach!! Da BLEACH!!! Jokes aside, damn brother, I might like you know but it wasn’t always like that. Heck! This was the biggest comeback in the game! Dude popped into the game & was immediately cringy, overly cocky, overly disrespectful, & honestly annoying. So what happened? How did this guy go from a 4.5 right out of the gate, to a literal 7! Well folks, Love changes a man–Nah, I’m just messing! Well for me personally he redeemed himself a bit on Episode 2 with his character feeling much more realized & defined, & after awhile, ‘Joe’ his player seemed to have eased into his role as time went on, even allowing himself to be a bit goofy. However, now that you’ve added the goofy, it becomes a balancing act since it seems you also want him to be highly intelligent. For now I really do like what I see, & am intrigued to see more. 👍🏼

Victor: 7

(Was at first a 4.5 due to cringy/annoying/overly cocky personality but was able to redeem himself in episode 2. By episode 3 his character was more well realized & Joe lightened up, even allowing him to be slightly more laid back & comedic)

Antagonist: (6)

Licker: 5

Kal Silver - 6.5 = I see you!

In terms of Antagonist, the stories pretty weak. I did like how Kal Silvers pulled up, but for the most part, I haven’t really seen anyone who demands my attention.

Side characters: (6)

Solid group with a good start but I have to see more.

Episode 3: 6

Episode 4: 6

Episode 5: 6

Plot: (8)

KING OF THE SEAS ARC: 7

Episode 1: 6.5

[I gave the plot itself a (6) & the characters, including their dialogue, was a little cringy–but I couldn’t stop smiling all the same. There was definitely a bit of a learning curve but will not count that against them, however by the halfway point both the players and the story began to adjust/get comfortable. Due to the story being a DND I will allow - for now - the camaraderie and dynamics of the players to affect my overall enjoyment of the plot (+.5)

Episode 2: 7.5

[A big improvement from episode 1]

CROWN GAME ARC: 8.6 -> 9

Episode 3: 8.5

[Hands down, the most funniest one so far]

Episode 4: 9.5

[Absolutely. Epic! The only reason I don’t give it a 10 is because I have seen things/sections that I hold slightly higher]

Episode 5: 8

[Everything from Victor shutting down a whole team, Kal showing off his dominance / competence, Kal vs 2 great Families (Victor, having just shut down an entire team, being one of them), the aftermath was well done, the jokes were on point, Brac straight up being on Death’s literal doorstep but still claiming W after W, Brac & Eden’s tag-team+banter, Boris ‘attack’ on Brac, Brac v Victor, However! Once mostly everyone left, Eden was left with the scrubs, and I already knew what was going to happened with the cloak since this was my second time watching, so for me the latter half definitely cooled off after mostly everyone left]

Pacing: 6.5

Episode 1: 5

Episode 2: 6

Episode 3: 7

Episode 4: 8

Episode 5: 6.5

[1st half-8 2nd half-5 Mean: 6.5]

World-building: 6

The islands was a very interesting & unique setting & I liked it. But the stories too young given it’s overall pacing. So I’ll have to continue waiting & see more.

Consistency: 10

Dialogue: 7

These are real people, saying real words. Even if their dialogue isn’t the greatest, you don’t get more authentic than this.

Themes: 2

[Episode 3: 2 = inklings of Totalitarianism or Authoritarianism, but must see more to confirm which one & is in need of more careful grooming]

Overall Score: 66.5 (D+)
