Help!! Expired PR card with US passport

Hello! We are traveling to Mexico and will be coming back in a week to Toronto. We just noticed that my husband’s PR card just expired last July 2024. We called IRCC but they told us to apply for PRTD and there is no guarantee on wait times. He is an American with valid US passport. Can he use his passport to re-enter Canada? We feel that its a waste to apply for a PRTD and wait times are so long..

Has anybody been on the same situation?
