Step Back is a narrative song like Break Up With Your Girlfriend, im bored
That’s why i don’t really hate the lyrics that much. Sure, i get that it’s all against feminism and just overall basic relationship morality. Yeah, it’s telling of a jealous woman, but all of these are just giving drama to me. My sister and I sometimes write characters for fun and we often fall back to narrative songs like this, whether toxic or not (because obviously characters can be toxic), for inspiration. I mean, Every Breathe You Take by The Police is highkey a stalker song, right?
The only thing I dislike about this is that I just learned of shitty things about that Ryan guy, but the lyrics itself? It’s a telenovela and it’s a jam.
We’re like “Step Back, Step Back, SILLY H*E” in the house and even then we’re aware enough to not actively do what the song is portraying. My gang and I also love Break Up With Your Girlfriend, im bored but we’re not a serial homewrecker 💀
I think it’s unpopular because many people associated this song with the artists themselves. It’s relatable really, because songs can be an avenue for interpersonal thoughts. But I also think, like any other literature, songs can just be a story, albeit the persona may be annoying for some.
