High-end Unraid Build
I've been a devoted Plex user for about 15 years, transitioning from a WD External drive to a Synology system, and eventually expanding with an additional bay. My journey continued with the use of a laptop, then a Mac Mini, and now a Ubuntu NUC running Plex Media Server with containers.
Recently, I faced the issue of running out of hard drive space (filling up around 130 TB), and having already purchased several hard drives, I am trying to decide if I should build my own Unraid NAS instead of opting for another expansion drive. Despite never having built a computer or NAS before, I felt it was time to take on the challenge. I'm particularly frustrated with the limitations of my Synology system, such as its inability to run Plex or be easily upgraded beyond adding more expansion bays.
Below, I've outlined my plan for a high-end Unraid build. I want this system to last a long time and be something I can be proud of, especially considering a Synology expansion unit alone costs about $450.
I plan to run Plex, various app containers in Docker, and potentially a camera system for my home security, as I have family and friends from all over the U.S. who use my Plex server. I would appreciate any suggestions for this build.
