What should THE THING be called on a scientific cellular level?

Resident Evil has the T Virus, 28 Days later has the Rage Virus. However the thing is not totally a virus, so it's not fair to call it one. In a deleted scene in the 1982 film. Fuchs asks Blair, "What kind of cell structure is this?" Blair responds with, "I'm not sure it's not any cell structure... at least not any cell structure as we know it. We see "THING" cells in the microscope in the 2011 image but I highly doubt that is THE THING's original form on a cellular lever as I believe those were imitated cells from the pilot that THE THING was mimicking. In the video game it is referred to as "The Cloud Virus" Probably based on the idea that clouds are constantly changing shape based on it's geological conditions. but again... it's not really a virus, But what would the cannon name be? I do believe THE THING never had a large organic original form, I do believe THE THING's "true form" has always been that of which on a cellular level. Now image a scientist discovering THE THING cells, It would be silly for the scientist to say "Oh, it's THE THING Cells" So what would be a good way to refer to THE THING on a cellular level? Or has there been a name for it I've missed? What would at least be a good way to refer to it as?
