Is this all performance art?
“I can’t help but feel that, in this frighteningly uncertain social situation, this has been an experiment to see if people still have the capacity to come together in support of someone when they have the ability to acknowledge their errors in real time, even before the public outcry surfaces. It appears possible that Matty is experimenting with the social internet in real time, in a potential Live performance art that highlights the current state of public discourse. The result of which being that, in the right spaces, there is still a lot of love and compassion. If this is not the case, then we can still appreciate the fact that we exist, even in 2024, with a popular artist that can still blur the lines between reality and performance so well that he has us guessing at his every move.”
This is an article I will continue to update in real time as I react over the next few days on this really interesting issue. I just don’t have time to collate all of my thoughts immediately though I feel it’s necessary to have an almost immediate reaction (as is the current online landscape), and thanks to the modern social internet, I’m able to update my article as time goes on. It’s been interesting to me that I haven’t seen many people suggest that this is a performance piece, so I felt it necessary to shine light on that possibility. Stay posted as I share more over the next few days. This, and other The 1975 entries are pre-cursors to a bigger project I am planning on the lore of Matty Healy and The 1975.
