Okay, you’ve stopped drinking for a while. How do you STAY sober?
As the joke goes: quitting drinking is easy, I’ve already done it 3 times
The point is that each time, I had a lot of motivation at the beginning, but after 1-2.5 years I’ve been relapsing. I’m starting to think I should quit again, but every time, I need some kind of serious wake up call before it happens. And once I’ve stopped for long enough, it’s tempting to get a drink at least out of social obligation, and it’s a slippery slope from there
It doesn’t help that I live in a country where alcohol is very prevalent in the local culture. If you’re not drinking you’re immediately labelled a party pooper, dates almost inevitably involve a bottle of wine (hence my third relapse), there’s no law against advertising alcohol (even towards teenagers), and people take pride in our alcoholic products so refusing alcohol is almost a political statement
Of course I know the usual tricks, but these only work for the first few years when you still have ironclad motivation. Do you guys have advice on how to stay sober after a few years, once the initial “trauma” is old and forgotten and motivation starts to waver?
Thanks
