is theater a proletarian or elitist art form?
I've been back and forth on this.
on one hand, it's an art that you don't need to go to a gallery for. small theaters are located all around the world showing new and old stories. small troupes can produce their own shows, and the creative freedom is often larger than in Hollywood or the gallery system. another point for it is that the stories are often easy to digest (like Into The Woods and The Crucible) and many promote socialist ideas of equality and the working class overtaking the rich (like Ragtime and Hadestown)
on the other hand, ticket prices can be a turn off, especially in big cities or for big productions. many working people can't afford access. another point is that, while many shows are easy to digest, a good number are still very hard to parce. theater is also heavily associated with opera and other old-money forms, which are usually inaccessible to most people.
I'm really unsure
