The amusement of being peripheral to a couple on a first date/meeting

Currently sitting and reading in a coffee shop and there's a couple in their late 40s/early 50s who is obviously meeting for the first time in person (the initial dialogue I overhead "oh you exist!" "So do you!") I think it's going well. I'm not trying to eavesdrop too heavy but I heard snippets of a conversation on scents and when I got up to use the restroom, the man was gently holding her arm and sniffing her "vanilla lotion"

I don't believe we're ultimately just monkeys but our dating rituals really don't help support that notion. They seem to be getting on and I wish them the best!
