Profiting from your shift

There are several songs, movies, books, and other random things that I can remember. Not exactly word for word but close enough to where I could probably redo some of it. Has anyone tried doing something like that? If so, what kind of hurdles did you experience? Especially thinking about potential legal issues if the folks who originally had these ideas still had them but just never did anyone with them.
