VR30 or 3.7

Given the fact that the VR30s have known turbo issues, should I avoid it?

I am interested in the Q50 and I plan to mod one if I were to get one. The VR30s response to modifications is attractive but I know it doesn’t have the same reliability as the 3.7. Should I just completely avoid the VR or is there a chance that I can get one and mod it without it blowing on me? I know a lot of people say things like “it’s not if, it’s when” so that kind of scares me away.
