[NB] A reflection on the Chronicles app

The announcement has only been out for a few hours, and I’ve already seen quite a few complaints from fans upset about the new app.

However, I think the existence of the chronicles app is a very good sign for the longevity of the franchise and the preservation of its content.

I’ve seen people upset that their years of work in OG didn’t matter, and now everyone can read the OG main story for free. I’ll be honest, my first reaction was similar. After all, all those Grimm and glow sticks to just be given the chapters for nothing?

Here’s my perspective. We all know the Obey Me OG App is going to shut down at some point in the future. Whether that future is near or in many years, no one can be certain. The Chronicles app is proof that The Obey Me team wants to preserve their game’s content, and to make the entire story accessible to as many people as possible. It seems obvious to me that the devs are setting up a place where they can catalogue the OG events and birthday events in the future, so they won’t be lost.

For years players have complained about the difficulty spike in the OG game, and how this makes the fourth season inaccessible to new/FTP players. Not to mention the hard lessons, which I as a VIP of 2 years still haven’t completed. Without spoiling anything, events that happened in the OG fourth season are very important to understanding the current plot. It makes sense to me that they released this update right before the third Nightbringer season. Because when MC returns to their original time, fans will be spoiled on some pretty big stuff from season 4.

The Chronicles app is the best way for the most fans to be able to experience the Obey Me story. I would much rather the story be made free for everyone rather than only a select few who got far in the OG game, and this is from someone who’s spent years grinding the dance battles. The fact that a gacha game is making years of content available for free is honestly amazing to me. They could have chosen to restrict it to VIP or make you complete the stages, but they didn’t.

How they‘ll handle the Devilgrams, I don’t know. But the fact that they’re taking this much effort to preserve OG makes me feel optimistic that the stories will be preserved as well. Personally, I would much rather see every single OG Devilgram that I’ve worked hard to get be free to the public, rather than fans having to migrate their accounts and only having access to the ones they managed to get.

If you’ve read this far, thank you! I would like to hear everyone’s perspectives on the new app, but please make sure to keep comments civil. Here’s to many more years of Obey Me!
