Answering the question: "Why is the GameCube considered a failure, when the Xbox isn't?"
It's a question I see a fair bit online (mainly from people who I suspect have very little experience with the original Xbox). I want to provide the reasons in this post, as there isn't one explanation for it:
- To get the obvious one out of the way; the Xbox was from a brand new competitor to the console space, Nintendo was an industry veteran.
- Multiplatform games tended to sell much better on Xbox, with only a few examples like Sonic Heroes where the GameCube version sold better.
- The Xbox had a significantly shorter sales life than the GameCube. The Xbox was quickly discontinued when the 360 came out. The GameCube kept on selling after the Wii was released, and even with the price cuts Nintendo was giving it, it still couldn't reach the Xbox's numbers.
- The Xbox had Halo on it, which in its prime was probably gaming's ambassador and the the beacon of what all games should be like (there was a reason why the term Halo killer existed during the 00's)
- The Xbox really pushed the online capabilities for console gaming. The GameCube was way behind even the Dreamcast and PS2 in terms of the online experience.
If I'm leaving anything out, please let me know in the comments below.
