What is your opinion on a Tanistry-Like Succession?
Tanistry was an elective system practiced in Ireland that allowed a tribal head to be selected from the current rulers male relatives by nobles.
The tanist selected made succession clear and even allowed the tanist to help the tribal head perform official duties/lead.
Would a dynastic election system like tanistry be an ideal middle between heriditary and elective monarchy?
Hereditary monarchism says the training of a successor preps them to better rule and give them a stake in good governance of their inheritance for the future.
Electoral monarchism says that an elected monarchy would minimize the chances of a bad/tyrannical monarch creating instability.
Seems like limiting the electoral pool to the agnatic members of a dynasty and having the election before the rulers death so the prince elect has time to learn from the current ruler gains all the benefits of hereditary monarchy while still allowing for bad monarchs to be avoided. In a devolved goverment, this also can give regions a voice through their electors so it is more stable.
You could even stretch to maintain a claim to Divine Right if you support it by saying the bloodline of the royal family is ordained by God.
