Why is no one interested in medical genetics?

I am currently a genetic counseling graduate student cycling through rotations, sometimes alongside medical students. Genetics is an enormous field with amazing potential, and yet there’s a shortage of both genetic counselors and geneticists. From my perspective geneticists have good pay, good work/life balance compared to other specialties, and feel rewarded by their work. So why aren’t more people choosing medical genetics?
