What do guns get us?

Hey everyone, a lot of people have recommended that LGBT get guns with the recent election results.

What does this actually achieve? When and how would we use them?

Edit: Hey everyone, thanks for all the answers. Realistically I would never get one solely for personal safety, I believe they're more likely to cause violence to myself or loved ones than prevent it. So for those who pointed to the black Panthers as a road map, how do you organize like that locally?
