Trying to transform from weeds to grass, best way to do so?

Hello! So I'm moving next week and the yard (very small) is pretty much all weeds and no grass. Which I would like grass.

I know I could weed kill, rake the soil and plant grass seed. But I do have a dog that I don't want to either mess up the grass seed, or the grass seed mess up her.

Then I thought about sod.... But I'm not sure.

What's the best way to go about this while owning a dog AND being a first time yard owner?
